Who these coffees suit

  • A good fit if

    • You want to swap your regular coffee without tasting mushrooms. The Fusion label says it plainly: it tastes like coffee, not mushrooms
    • You want the highest mushroom ratio. The Instant is 30% mushroom powder by weight, three times the ground blends
    • You have no brewing gear. The Instant needs one teaspoon and hot water, nothing else
    • You just want excellent coffee. Amora is a single-origin Guatemalan with no mushrooms, and Mahuri is glazed with New Zealand manuka honey

  • Probably not for you if

    • You avoid caffeine. Every product here is real coffee. The capsule mushrooms are the caffeine-free route
    • You use a K-cup brewer. The Fusion label says it is not recommended for K-cup machines
    • You are strictly vegan and want Mahuri. It is glazed with honey, which is animal-derived
    • You are looking for kava the plant. Nothing here contains it; see the questions below
    • You are pregnant, nursing or limiting caffeine on medical advice. Talk to your doctor about coffee generally

How to brew them

Each format brews differently. The labels state their own methods.

  1. 1Ground: drip or pour-over

    The Fusion works in a coffee maker or pour-over setups like Chemex, Aeropress and V60. Its label advises against K-cup machines.

  2. 2Instant: one teaspoon, hot water

    Add one scoop to a cup, pour 8 to 10 oz of hot water at 160 to 175°F, stir. The label suggests two scoops or milk for a richer cup.

  3. 3Whole beans: grind fresh

    Amora and Mahuri are whole beans, so you need a grinder. Grind just before brewing.

  4. 4Store it sealed and dry

    Cool, dry place away from sunlight. The instant keeps best consumed within 3 months of opening per its label.

Common questions

Does mushroom coffee taste like mushrooms?

No. The Fusion label states it tastes like coffee, not mushrooms. The mushroom powders add subtle earthy undertones under the roast, and the base is 70 to 90% real Arabica.

Is there kava, the plant, in KAVA coffee?

No. KAVA is our coffee brand name only. No product here contains kava root, Piper methysticum, the plant covered by an FDA advisory. The ingredients are Arabica coffee, organic lion's mane and organic chaga, and nothing else in the mushroom blends.

How much mushroom is in each cup?

The 4 oz Fusion states 616 mg of lion's mane and 618 mg of chaga per serving. Vitality is 5% of each mushroom by weight, and the Instant is 15% of each, the strongest ratio in the range.

How much caffeine do these have?

The labels do not state a caffeine figure. All five are real Arabica coffee, not decaf. The mushroom blends contain 10 to 30% less coffee by weight than a pure coffee, and that is as precise as the labels allow us to be.

Which products contain no mushrooms?

Two. Amora Cherry Zest is a single-origin Guatemalan coffee, and Mahuri is Arabica glazed with New Zealand manuka honey. Both are here for people who want the coffee without the mushrooms.

Is the mushroom powder fruiting body or mycelium?

The coffee labels say organic mushroom powder without specifying, so we won't guess. Our capsule products do state fruiting body or mycelium on every label, if that distinction matters to you.

Are these vegan?

The three mushroom coffees and Amora contain only coffee and mushroom powder. Mahuri is glazed with honey, which is animal-derived, so it is not vegan despite being a plant-based bean.

Where do the beans come from?

Brazil for the Fusion, Brazil and Mexico for Vitality, Papua New Guinea single origin for the Instant, and Guatemala's Huehuetenango and Antigua regions for Amora. All five are roasted and packed in the USA.

Can I brew the Fusion in a Keurig?

The label says not recommended for K-cup brewers. Use a drip machine, French press or any pour-over method instead.

Will mushroom coffee improve my focus or energy?

We won't claim that. It is real coffee, so it contains caffeine like any coffee, and the mushroom content is stated by weight on each label. What it does beyond being coffee is not something we will promise.
