Grass Fed & Finished Beef Tallow
The first ingredient and the whole base of the cream. Rendered beef fat, from cattle fed and finished on grass. Both are stated, because "grass fed" alone often is not the same thing. It is an animal fat, so this is not a vegan product. It naturally contains the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K. We will tell you they are in there, and we will not tell you what they do.
Organic Sweet Orange & Bergamot
The two essential oils that make this one Orange and Bergamot rather than one of the other jars in the range. Sweet orange is the sweeter of the two. Bergamot is sharper and a little floral, closer to Earl Grey tea than to an orange, since Earl Grey is what bergamot oil is best known for. They are what you smell, and they are why this jar is not fragrance-free.
Organic Olive & Jojoba Oils
Extra virgin olive oil and golden jojoba, whipped into the tallow so it spreads rather than sitting in a solid block. Jojoba is a liquid wax rather than a true oil, which is why the finish is closer to satin than slick.
That is the entire list, five things. There is no water in the formula, which is the reason there is no preservative in it either. A preservative system is there to protect water, and there is none to protect.

Three habits that make a tallow balm work better

Warm it between your fingers
Scoop a little and rub it between your fingertips for a few seconds first. Warm tallow spreads three or four times further than cold tallow straight off the surface of the jar.

Use less than you think
A pea-sized amount covers a whole face. This is a concentrated balm with no water in it, so most of what people call greasiness is simply too much product sitting on top of the skin.

Put it on slightly damp skin
An anhydrous balm carries no water of its own. It holds in whatever is already there. Straight after a shower, on skin patted rather than rubbed dry, is when it does the most.

It is beef fat, so it is not vegan
Tallow is rendered beef fat and it is the first ingredient here. There is no plant-based version of this jar. If you avoid animal ingredients, our Shea-Vah raw shea butter is the one to look at instead. We would rather say this plainly than let you find it in the ingredient list.

It is scented, not fragrance-free
Organic sweet orange and organic bergamot essential oil. No synthetic fragrance, but essential oils are a common trigger for reactive skin, and tallow carries a faint scent of its own underneath them. If you need something with no scent at all, this is not it.

Bergamot and sunlight
Bergamot oil can make skin more sensitive to sunlight. Use this one in the evening, or on skin that stays covered, and give it time to absorb before you go out in strong sun. If you want a jar with no citrus in it, Peaceful Night is fir needle and lavender instead.

It melts
Tallow softens around 85°F. In a hot delivery van or a warm bathroom the jar can go liquid, and the oils may separate as it cools. It is not spoiled. Stir it and put it somewhere cool. But if your home runs warm year-round, know that going in.

Clean dry fingers. There is no water in the jar and no preservative in it, so keeping water out is what keeps it good.

If your skin is reactive
It contains sweet orange and bergamot essential oil. If you react to essential oils, patch test on the inside of your forearm for a few days before using it more widely.

Bergamot oil can make skin more sensitive to sunlight. Use this jar in the evening, or on skin that stays covered.

In case of accidental contact with eyes, rinse thoroughly with clean water. If irritation occurs, stop using it.

Questions, answered
Is this vegan?
No. Beef tallow is rendered beef fat and it is the first ingredient in the jar. Nothing about the formula can be made vegan by swapping a minor ingredient. The tallow is the product. If you want the same job done on a plant base, our Shea-Vah Exotic Raw Shea Butter is the one to look at.
What does it smell like?
Sweet orange and bergamot together. Orange is the sweeter of the two. Bergamot is sharper and slightly floral, and it is the citrus used to flavor Earl Grey tea, so that is the closest reference most people have. It settles down on the skin within a few minutes.
Does it smell like beef?
Not really, but it is a fair question. Properly rendered tallow has a mild, slightly waxy smell rather than a cooked one, and the citrus oils sit on top of it. Some people catch a faint savory note underneath, particularly early in the jar. It fades on the skin quickly.
Can I use it before going out in the sun?
We would use it at night instead. Bergamot oil can make skin more sensitive to sunlight, so this is not the jar to put on your face before a day outdoors. On skin that stays covered it is fine at any time. If you want something with no citrus in it, Peaceful Night is fir needle and lavender.
Can I use it on my face?
Yes, plenty of people do, and a pea-sized amount is enough for a whole face. It is a rich balm, so if your skin is oily or you are prone to congestion, try it on a small area for a few days first. Keep it out of your eyes. Read the sun note above before using it on your face during the day.
Why is there no preservative in it?
Because there is no water in it. A preservative system is there to stop things growing in the water phase of a product, and this formula has no water phase. It is five oils and fats. Keep water out of the jar, use clean dry fingers, and it keeps.
What if it arrives melted?
Tallow softens around 85°F, so in summer a jar can arrive liquid or with the oils slightly separated. It is not spoiled. Stir it gently and put it in the fridge for an hour to set. If you are not happy with it, the 30-day guarantee still applies.
