What PDRN actually is
PDRN is short for polydeoxyribonucleotide. It is a fragment of DNA, and in skincare it is used as a humectant and a conditioning agent. It is the seventh ingredient on this label, which puts it after the water, the four humectants and panthenol, and before the peptide.
- It is a DNA fragment
- Not an acid, not a retinoid and not an exfoliant. There is nothing in it that makes skin peel or sting.
- It is usually from fish
- In cosmetics PDRN is normally extracted from salmon or trout. We have asked the manufacturer to confirm the source used here and will state it on this page once we have it.
- It is water soluble
- Which is why it sits in a light watery serum like this one rather than in a cream or an oil.
A note on the word brightening
There is no vitamin C, no niacinamide and no alpha arbutin in this formula, so it is not working on pigment. What it does is hold water in the skin, and skin that is evenly hydrated reflects light more evenly, which is where the glow comes from. If you are looking for a serum to work on dark spots, this is not that serum.

Panthenol is provitamin B5 and it conditions. Hydroxyethylcellulose is a thickener, and it is the reason the serum spreads rather than running off the fingers.
