About the name
Why almost no sandalwood soap contains sandalwood
Sandalwood is the name of a scent and, separately, the name of a tree. Santalum album, the Indian sandalwood the scent is named after, is listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN. That is why almost no soap on the shelf, at any price, contains real sandalwood oil. This one does not either. The scent comes from Fragrance, which is the last item on the ingredient list. We would rather tell you that than let the name do the work.

What the bar is made of
Four saponified oils
Saponified means the oils were reacted with an alkali until they became soap. This is true soap, not a detergent bar with a soap shaped mold.

Organic extra virgin olive oil
First on the list, so the largest part of the bar. Olive lathers slowly and it is what makes a bar mild.

Organic palm oil
Marked fair trade sustainable on the label. Palm is what makes a bar hard enough to survive a wet bathroom.

Marked fair trade. Coconut is the one that makes the lather big and bubbly rather than creamy.

Let it dry out between uses
This is the single biggest factor. A bar sitting in its own puddle dissolves far faster than one that dries. A draining dish is worth more than anything else on this list.

Warm water, not hot
Warm water is enough for a thick lather, which is what the label says. Hot water softens the bar faster than it needs to.

Keep it out of the stream
Store it away from the direct spray of the shower rather than on the ledge under it.

Questions, answered
Does it contain real sandalwood oil?
No. The ingredient list is four saponified oils and Fragrance. The sandalwood scent comes from the fragrance, not from sandalwood.
Why not use real sandalwood?
Santalum album is listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN, the wood is not ready to harvest for around twenty years, and Indian production has fallen to a fraction of what it was in the 1970s. Almost no soap at any price uses the real oil.
Is this real soap or a detergent bar?
Real soap. Saponified oils means the oils were reacted with an alkali to become soap. There is no synthetic detergent base in it.
Is it vegan?
All four oils are plant based. We have asked the manufacturer to confirm that the fragrance contains nothing animal derived and will state the answer here.
Is it fragrance free?
No. Fragrance is the last ingredient on the list.
Is it good for sensitive skin?
It is a fragranced bar, and fragrance is the most common cause of contact allergy in cosmetics. If your skin reacts easily, patch test on the inside of your forearm first, or pick an unscented bar instead.
Does it contain palm oil?
Yes. The label marks it fair trade sustainable. We have asked which certification stands behind that wording.
How big is the bar?

How long does one bar last?
Mostly down to whether it dries out between uses. A bar left sitting in water goes in a fraction of the time one on a draining dish does.
Can I use it on my face?
It is sold as a body bar. True soap is alkaline and some people find that drying on facial skin.
