Ayuvas: Premium Ayurvedic Complex $39.99

What it is

Seventeen ingredients, twenty materials, one capsule

Ayuvas is a traditional style Ayurvedic blend in a vegetable capsule. The label lists seventeen ingredients, but two of them, Triphala and Trikatu, are themselves three herb formulas. Counted out, the capsule holds twenty one entries covering twenty distinct materials, since amla appears both inside Triphala and again on its own line. One capsule a day, sixty in a bottle, so a bottle lasts two months.

Two of the seventeen are not single herbs

Formulas inside a formula

Triphala

Three fruits

  • Amla
  • Bibhitaki
  • Haritaki

Trikatu

Three pungents

  • Black pepper
  • Long pepper
  • Ginger

Both are formulas in their own right and both are sold on their own elsewhere. Here they sit nested inside a larger blend, which is why the ingredient list is shorter than the actual contents.

Every ingredient, named

What each one actually is

Ashwagandha Withania somnifera, root
2.5 percent extract. The best known Ayurvedic adaptogen in Western markets.
Turmeric Curcuma longa, root
95 percent extract, the highest concentration figure on this label.
Cinnamon Cinnamomum wilsonii, bark
A Chinese cinnamon species, not the Ceylon or cassia most kitchens use.
Holy basil, tulsi Ocimum tenuiflorum, leaf
2 percent extract. Called tulsi in India.
Garlic Allium sativum, bulb
1 percent extract.
Black pepper Piper nigrum, fruit
Part of Trikatu, and the source of piperine, long used alongside turmeric to help absorption.
Long pepper, pippali Piper longum, fruit
Part of Trikatu. A hotter, sweeter relative of black pepper.
Ginger Zingiber officinale, root
Part of Trikatu, the third of the three pungents.
Amla, Indian gooseberry Phyllanthus emblica, fruit
Part of Triphala, and listed separately again on its own line.
Bibhitaki Terminalia bellirica, fruit
Part of Triphala.
Haritaki Terminalia chebula, fruit
Part of Triphala.
Sandalwood, as labeled Pterocarpus soyauxii, wood
The species named on the label is African padauk, a legume in the family Fabaceae. True sandalwood is Santalum album, a different family entirely. We have asked the manufacturer which material is actually in the capsule and will correct this entry.
Clove Syzygium aromaticum, flower bud
The dried unopened bud.
Celery seed Apium graveolens, seed
Celery is a recognized allergen.
Licorice Glycyrrhiza glabra, root
See the note below before you order.
Brahmi Bacopa monnieri, leaf
20 percent extract, the second highest concentration on the label.
Shilajit Mineral pitch
Not a plant. A resinous material collected from rock in high mountain ranges.
Cordyceps Mycelium
Not a plant either. A fungus, grown here as mycelium rather than as the fruiting body.
Lavender Lavandula, whole plant
Whole plant powder rather than the essential oil.
Peppermint Mentha piperita, leaf
The last botanical on the list.

Before you order

Three things the label tells you

Licorice is in the blend. Licorice root is the one ingredient here with a well documented caution. Taken steadily it is associated with raised blood pressure and lowered potassium. If you have high blood pressure, or you take medication for your heart or your blood pressure, talk to your doctor before starting this.

Celery seed is in the blend. Celery is a recognized allergen. If you react to celery, this is not the supplement for you.

It is made in a shared facility. The label states the facility may also process milk, soy, wheat, egg, peanuts, tree nuts, fish and crustacean shellfish. If you have a serious allergy to any of those, that matters more than the ingredient list does.

Good to know

Questions, answered

60 capsules, one a day, so a two month supply.

How many ingredients are in it?

The label lists seventeen. Two of those, Triphala and Trikatu, are three herb formulas in their own right, so the capsule contains twenty one entries covering twenty distinct materials.

What is Triphala?

A traditional Ayurvedic formula of three dried fruits, amla, bibhitaki and haritaki. It is sold on its own as well, and here it sits inside a larger blend.

What is Trikatu?

A traditional Ayurvedic formula of three pungent ingredients, black pepper, long pepper and ginger.

What is Shilajit?

Not a plant. It is a resinous material collected from rock in high mountain ranges and used for a long time in Ayurvedic preparations.

What is Brahmi?

Bacopa monnieri, a creeping herb. It is here as a 20 percent leaf extract, the second highest concentration figure on the label.

How much of each herb is in a capsule?

The label gives extract strengths for some ingredients but not the milligram amount of each one. We have asked the manufacturer for a full Supplement Facts panel and will publish it here.

Is the sandalwood real sandalwood?

The species named on the label, Pterocarpus soyauxii, is African padauk, which is not related to true sandalwood, Santalum album. We have asked the manufacturer to confirm which material is in the capsule.

Does it contain allergens?

Celery seed is in the blend, and celery is a recognized allergen. The label also states the facility may process milk, soy, wheat, egg, peanuts, tree nuts, fish and crustacean shellfish.

Is it vegetarian?

The capsule is HPMC and the magnesium stearate is stated as vegetable. Cordyceps is a fungus, not an animal.

How long does a bottle last?

Sixty capsules at one a day is two months.

When should I take it?

The label says one capsule daily, preferably with a meal.

How does the subscription work?

Subscribe and save takes 5 percent off every order and ships once a month. You can skip or cancel from your account.
