What it is

Berberine hydrochloride, two capsules a day

Berberine is a compound found in the bark and root of several plants. This product supplies it as berberine hydrochloride in a vegetable capsule. Sixty capsules, two a day, taken with 6 to 8 oz of water.

Before you order

Who should not take this

Do not take berberine if

  • You are pregnant. Berberine is believed to cross the placenta. Kernicterus, a form of brain damage, has developed in newborn infants exposed to berberine, and the proposed reason is that berberine slows the liver's clearance of bilirubin.
  • You are breastfeeding. Berberine transfers into breast milk.
  • You are under 18.

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist first if

  • You take medication for diabetes. Both lower blood sugar and the combination can take it too low.
  • You take cyclosporine.
  • You take medication for blood pressure.
  • You take any medication metabolized by CYP2C9, CYP2D6 or CYP3A4. Berberine can slow how quickly the liver breaks those down. Your pharmacist can tell you whether yours is one of them.

This is not a complete list of interactions. If you take anything prescribed, check before you start.

The label lists two berberine extracts at different strengths and gives no milligram amount for either, and there is no net weight. That means there is no way to work out how much berberine is in a capsule. We have asked the manufacturer for the amounts, the net weight, and why there are two extracts, and we will publish the answers here.

Good to know

Questions, answered

60 capsules, two a day, so a 30 day supply.

Who should not take berberine?

Anyone pregnant, anyone breastfeeding and anyone under 18. Berberine is believed to cross the placenta, and kernicterus, a form of brain damage, has developed in newborn infants exposed to it. If you take any prescribed medication, particularly for diabetes or blood pressure, check with your doctor or pharmacist before you start.

Does berberine interact with medication?

Yes. There are major interactions with diabetes medication and with cyclosporine, and moderate interactions with blood pressure medication and with drugs metabolized by CYP2C9, CYP2D6 and CYP3A4. This is not a complete list.

How much berberine is in a capsule?

The label does not say. It lists two berberine hydrochloride extracts, at 97 percent and at 8 percent, and gives no milligram amount for either. We have asked the manufacturer.

Why are there two different extracts?

The label does not explain it. We have asked.

What is berberine?

A compound found in the bark and root of several plants. Here it is supplied as berberine hydrochloride.

How do I take it?

Two capsules daily with 6 to 8 oz, which is 177 to 236 ml, of water.

How long does a bottle last?

Sixty capsules at two a day is thirty days.

Is it vegetarian?

The capsule is cellulose, which is plant based. L-leucine is an amino acid and can be produced by fermentation or derived from animal protein. We have asked the manufacturer which is used here.

Does it upset your stomach?

Digestive upset is the side effect most often reported with berberine. Taking it with water and with food, and starting with the label serving rather than more, is the usual advice.

What is the net weight?

Not stated on the label. The 90 g figure is a gross weight and includes the bottle.

How does the subscription work?

Subscribe and save takes 5 percent off every order and it ships once a month. You can skip or cancel from your account.
