What it is
Two capsules a day, sixty in a bottle. The capsule is pullulan, a material made by fermentation rather than from cellulose, and the only other ingredient is organic rice hull. The rest of what matters here is in the ingredient line itself, so the next section quotes it.
Read the label with us
“Organic Cordyceps (Cordyceps Sinensis)1, Mushroom Mycelium Powder2 (Standardized to 40% polysaccharides [400mg])3, Organic capsule (pullulan, water), organic rice hull.”
Wild Cordyceps sinensis is the caterpillar fungus from the Tibetan plateau and it is one of the most expensive biological materials in the world. What is cultivated commercially is usually Cordyceps militaris or a mycelium strain. We have asked the manufacturer which species is in this capsule and will correct this line when they answer.
Mycelium is the thread network the fungus grows as. The mushroom is the fruiting body it later produces. This product is the mycelium, and mycelium is grown on grain.
Polysaccharide is a broad measure and it counts starch, because starch is a polysaccharide. Mycelium is grown on grain and the grain is not separated out, so a polysaccharide figure on a mycelium product counts the substrate along with the fungus. The figure people actually want is beta-glucan, and this label does not give one. We have asked for it. We have also asked whether the 400 mg refers to the mycelium powder or to the polysaccharides.
Two parts of the same organism
The thread network the fungus spreads as. Grown commercially on grain, harvested together with the grain it grew on. This is what is in this bottle.
The mushroom itself, the part that pushes up out of the substrate. Published comparisons put beta-glucan much higher and starch much lower in fruiting body material than in grain grown mycelium.
Neither is a fake. They are different material with different composition, and a label that says mycelium is telling you which one you are buying. What it is not telling you here is the beta-glucan figure.
Good to know
60 capsules, two a day, so a 30 day bottle. Vegan pullulan capsule.
Mycelium. The label says Mushroom Mycelium Powder.
Mycelium is the thread network the fungus grows as, and it is cultivated on grain. The fruiting body is the mushroom itself. They are different material with different composition.
Polysaccharide is a broad category that includes starch. Because mycelium is grown on grain and the grain is not separated out, a polysaccharide figure counts the substrate as well as the fungus. It is not the same as a beta-glucan figure.
The label does not state it. We have asked the manufacturer and will publish the figure here when we have it.
The label says Cordyceps sinensis. Commercially cultivated cordyceps is usually Cordyceps militaris or a mycelium strain, so we have asked the manufacturer to confirm which is in this capsule.
Yes. The capsule is pullulan, which is produced by fermentation, and the filler is organic rice hull.
A capsule material made by fermentation. It is used instead of gelatin or cellulose and it is what makes these capsules vegan.
Mycelium is cultivated on grain and the grain is not separated out of the finished powder. We have asked the manufacturer which grain is used and whether the product is tested for gluten.
Two capsules daily. The label says they can be taken with food or on an empty stomach.
Sixty capsules at two a day is thirty days.
It is not for anyone under 18. If you are pregnant, nursing or have a medical condition, speak to your doctor first. Anyone who is immunocompromised or on immunosuppressant medication should check before taking any mushroom supplement.
