Get the most out of it

Three habits that make any gel cleanser work better

  1. 1 Use less than you think

A pea-sized amount covers the whole face. More gel does not clean more, it just empties the bottle sooner.

  2. 2 Lukewarm, never hot

Hot water dries skin faster than the cleanser ever will, and it is the usual reason a face wash gets blamed for tight skin.

  3. 3 Do not chase the squeak

Squeaky means stripped. Your face should feel comfortable after rinsing, not tight.

Before you buy

Three things worth knowing

  • It is a small bottle

2 oz is small for a face wash. Most sit somewhere between 5 and 12 oz. You are paying for the formula, not the volume, and a pea-sized amount is all one wash needs. If you want a charcoal wash for the whole body, the Shivchar bar is the better buy.

  • It contains tea tree oil

Organic tea tree essential oil is in the formula. It is one of the better documented contact sensitisers in cosmetics, and it gets more sensitising once it has oxidised, so keep the cap on and the bottle out of direct sun. If you have reacted to tea tree before, this is not the cleanser for you. Everyone else, patch test first.

  • It is a cleanser, not a treatment

It removes oil, sunscreen and light makeup. It is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent acne or any other skin condition, and we will not tell you otherwise. If you are treating a diagnosed condition, ask your clinician what belongs in your routine.

Good to know

Questions, answered

Does charcoal face wash actually work?

Activated charcoal binds oil on contact, but published dermatology reviews have found little clinical evidence for most charcoal skincare claims. In a wash-off gel it is one small ingredient out of eleven. The surfactants do the cleaning. Buy Amala for the sulfate-free formula and the aloe base, not the charcoal.

Can I use it every day?

Yes. Once or twice a day suits most skin. If your face feels tight or looks flaky afterwards, drop to once a day. Tightness after washing is a sign the skin barrier has been stripped, not a sign of clean skin.

Is it good for oily skin?

It rinses clean without a heavy residue, so oily and combination skin tend to get on with it. It will not reduce how much oil your skin produces. No cleanser does. It is on your face for under a minute.

Is it fragrance-free?

No. There is no added fragrance, but organic tea tree essential oil is in the formula and you will smell it. If you need a fully unscented cleanser, this is not it.

Will it remove makeup?

Light makeup and chemical sunscreen, yes, in one wash. Long-wear makeup and mineral sunscreen usually need an oil or balm first, then this as the second cleanse. That is true of gel cleansers generally.

Does it contain SLS or sulfates?

No. There is no sodium lauryl sulfate or sodium laureth sulfate on the label. The cleaning agents are coconut oil ethers and cocamidopropyl betaine, both coconut-derived. You can check the full ingredient list on this page.

Can I use it on my body?

You can, but a 2 oz bottle will not last long on a whole body. For the shower, Shivchar charcoal soap is the same idea in bar form and costs less.
