How to Use
Scoop a little with clean dry fingers and warm it between your fingertips for a few seconds. Smooth it over the face, body or hands. A pea-sized amount covers a whole face, and slightly damp skin is when it does the most.
Patch test on the inside of your forearm for a few days first if you react to essential oils.

Grass Fed & Finished Beef Tallow
The first ingredient and the whole base of the cream. Rendered beef fat, from cattle fed and finished on grass. Both are stated, because "grass fed" alone often is not the same thing. It is an animal fat, so this is not a vegan product. It naturally contains the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K; we will tell you they are in there, and we will not tell you what they do.
Organic Fir Needle & Lavender
The two essential oils that make this one Peaceful Night rather than one of the other two in the range. Fir needle is green and resinous, lavender is soft and floral. They are what you smell, and they are why this jar is not fragrance-free.
Organic Olive & Jojoba Oils
Extra virgin olive oil and golden jojoba, blended into the tallow so it spreads rather than sits in a solid block. Jojoba is a liquid wax rather than a true oil, which is why the finish is closer to satin than slick.
That is the entire list, five things. There is no water in the formula, which is the reason there is no preservative in it either: a preservative system is there to protect water, and there is none to protect.

Three habits that make a tallow balm work better

Warm it between your fingers
Scoop a little and rub it between your fingertips for a few seconds first. Warm tallow spreads three or four times further than cold tallow straight off the surface of the jar.

Use less than you think
A pea-sized amount covers a whole face. This is a concentrated balm with no water in it, so most of what people call greasiness is simply too much product sitting on top of the skin.

Put it on slightly damp skin
An anhydrous balm carries no water of its own. It holds in whatever is already there. Straight after a shower, on skin patted rather than rubbed dry, is when it does the most.

Warm it for a few seconds
Tallow sets firm in the jar. Scoop a little with clean dry fingers and hold it between your fingertips for five or ten seconds. It turns to oil and then spreads. Taking it straight off the jar and dragging it across the skin is what makes people call a balm heavy.

Slightly damp skin, not dry skin
Put it on within a minute of washing, while the skin still feels damp. An oil based balm has no water in it to add, so it does its best work holding on to water that is already there.

What the two oils smell like
Fir needle is green and resinous, close to cut pine. Lavender is soft and floral. Together they read quiet rather than sweet. That is where the Peaceful Night name comes from.

It softens around 85°F
Tallow softens at about 85°F, 29.4°C. In a hot mailbox or a car in summer it can arrive liquid. That is not spoilage. Stir it and put it in the fridge for an hour and it sets again. The surface may come back slightly grainy, which is the fat recrystallizing and nothing more.

Keep water out of it
Wet fingers are the one thing that can spoil a waterless balm, because water is what gives anything something to grow in. Scoop with dry fingers or a small clean spoon.

Away from heat and light
A bedside drawer or a shelf away from the shower. Heat and light are what turn oils rancid over time, not time by itself.

Questions, answered
Is this vegan?
No. Beef tallow is rendered beef fat and it is the first ingredient in the jar. Nothing about the formula can be made vegan by swapping a minor ingredient. The tallow is the product. If you want the same job done on a plant base, our Shea-Vah Exotic Raw Shea Butter is the one to look at.
Does it smell like beef?
Not really, but it is fair to ask. Properly rendered tallow has a mild, slightly waxy smell rather than a cooked one, and the fir needle and lavender sit on top of it. Most people notice the essential oils and nothing else. Some people, particularly early in the jar, catch a faint savory note underneath. It fades on the skin within a minute or two.
Is it fragrance-free?
No. There is no synthetic fragrance in it, but organic fir needle and organic lavender essential oil are both in the formula and you will smell them. Essential oils are not the same thing as fragrance-free.
Can I use it on my face?
Yes, plenty of people do, and a pea-sized amount is enough for a whole face. It is a rich balm, so if your skin is oily or you are prone to congestion, try it on a small area for a few days first. Keep it out of your eyes.
Will it feel greasy?
It depends almost entirely on how much you use. This is a concentrated balm with no water in it, so a pea-sized amount warmed between the fingers sinks in within a few minutes. A fingerful will sit on top and feel heavy. Start with less than feels right.
Why is there no preservative in it?
Because there is no water in it. A preservative system is there to stop things growing in the water phase of a product, and this formula has no water phase. It is five oils and fats. Keep water out of the jar, use clean dry fingers, and it keeps.
What if it arrives melted?
Tallow softens around 85°F, so in summer a jar can arrive liquid or with the oils slightly separated. It is not spoiled. Stir it gently and put it in the fridge for an hour to set. If you are not happy with it, the 30-day guarantee still applies.

Why does the surface look grainy?
Tallow can go grainy if it melts and then cools slowly, which usually happens in transit in warm weather. It is a texture change in the fat, not spoilage, and it still melts on contact with skin.
Do I need a moisturizer on top of it?
No. It is the last step. Anything applied over an oil based balm sits on top of it rather than sinking in.
