Raw Organic Shea Butter.
That is the whole list. One ingredient, no water, no preservative, no added fragrance and nothing whipped in. Shea comes from a tree nut.

It is firm in the jar. Scrape a small amount with the back of a fingernail and rub it between your palms for ten seconds first, and it turns to oil and spreads properly. An amount the size of a pea covers both hands.

What is in the jar
The only thing in the jar. Not shea butter plus water, plus a thickener, plus a preservative. Read the ingredient list and there is one line on it. Shea naturally contains vitamins A and E and a mix of fatty acids. We will tell you they are in there. We will not tell you what they do.
Refining strips shea of its color and its smell, and of some of what it started with. This is the unrefined kind, which is why it has a nutty, slightly smoky scent and why it is not bright white. If you have used a refined shea butter before, this one will smell and look different.
No water, no preservative, no fragrance, no emulsifier, no whipping agent. There is no water in the jar, which is the reason there is nothing in it to preserve water. It is firm at room temperature because that is what shea butter does when nobody softens it.
Whipped shea butters feel lighter because air and usually an oil have been beaten into them. Nothing wrong with that, but you get less shea per jar. This one is the raw material, so a little goes a long way and you warm it yourself.

Get the most out of it
Three habits that make raw shea butter easier to use
Straight from the jar it is firm. Scrape a small amount with the back of a fingernail and rub it between your palms for ten seconds. It turns to oil and spreads properly. Trying to push it onto skin cold is where most of the frustration with raw shea comes from.
There is no water in this jar, so nothing has been diluted. An amount the size of a pea covers both hands. A fingerful will sit on the surface and feel heavy, and people usually blame the butter rather than the amount.
Shea has no water of its own. It holds in whatever is already there. The best moment is straight out of the shower, on skin patted rather than rubbed dry.
Tallow or shea
We make two kinds of rich moisturizer. The difference is what the base is made of.
| Shea-Vah Raw Shea Butter | Amastra Tallow Cream | |
|---|---|---|
| Base | Raw shea butter | Grass-fed beef tallow |
| Ingredients | One | Five |
| Texture | Firm, warm it in your palms | Whipped and soft from the jar |
| Scent | Natural nutty, nothing added | Essential oils, three scents |
| Vegan | Yes | No |
| Size | 4 oz | 2 oz |
| Price | $27.00, was $30.00 | $27.00 |
The Amastra jars come in Peaceful Night, Lemongrass and Lavender, and Orange and Bergamot. See all tallow skincare.
Why people pick it
Before you buy
Unrefined shea has a nutty, slightly smoky scent of its own. Nothing has been added and nothing has been stripped out. Most people stop noticing it within a minute of putting it on. If you want a scented butter, the Amastra jars are scented with essential oils instead. If you want no smell at all, refined shea from another brand is what you are after, and we would rather say so.
This is raw shea, not a whipped cream, so it is hard in the jar and needs warming in your palms. It can also develop a slightly gritty texture if it has warmed up and cooled down slowly, in a hot delivery van for example. The grains are shea, they are harmless, and they melt on contact with skin. There is a fix in the FAQ below.
This is a heavy butter. On oily or congestion-prone skin it may be too much for the face, though plenty of people use it on the body and on the ends of their hair with no trouble. Shea comes from the nut of the shea tree. Reactions are uncommon, but if you have a tree nut allergy, speak to your doctor before using it.
Looking after it
Shea likes 60°F to 70°F, out of direct sun and away from radiators. If it has been somewhere warm, let it come back to room temperature before you dig in.
Clean dry fingers, or scrape with the back of a fingernail. There is no water in the jar and no preservative in it, so keeping water out is what keeps it good.
Shea comes from a tree nut. Reactions are uncommon, but if you have a tree nut allergy, speak to your doctor first. Patch test on the inside of your forearm for a few days before using it more widely.
Good to know
No. The ingredient list is one line, raw organic shea butter. No water, no preservative, no fragrance, no emulsifier, nothing whipped in. That is also why it is firm and why it has its own scent.
Shea butter is a mix of fatty acids that set at different temperatures. If a jar warms up and then cools down slowly, the harder fraction forms crystals you can feel as grit. It is still shea butter and it is perfectly usable. To reset it, melt the butter fully in a bowl over warm water, then put it straight in the fridge so it sets fast rather than slowly. The graininess goes.
Nutty and slightly smoky, a bit like unroasted nuts. That is the shea itself, since this is the unrefined kind and nothing has been added or deodorized. It fades on the skin quickly.
Plenty of people do, especially in winter and on dry patches. It is a rich butter though, so if your skin is oily or you are prone to congestion, try it on a small area for a few days first, or keep it for your body. Keep it out of your eyes.
Yes. Shea butter comes from the nut of the shea tree, so there is nothing animal derived in the jar and nothing is tested on animals. If you are comparing it with our Amastra creams, those are made with beef tallow and are not vegan.
Shea softens in heat, so a jar can arrive soft in summer. It is not spoiled. Put it somewhere cool and it firms up again. If it sets grainy, use the melt and chill method above.
That depends entirely on how much you use, but 4 oz of undiluted shea goes further than most people expect, because there is no water in it. Used on hands, elbows and feet, most people get a few months out of a jar. Kept cool and dry, unrefined shea keeps for a year or two.
